A man first noticed the problem when a powerful, unpleasant smell began spreading through his house. He cleaned the rooms, checked the garbage, inspected the plumbing, and searched for signs of a dead animal, but nothing explained it. Strangely, the odor became strongest near one particular wall beside the living room.

After several days, he called a pest-control worker to investigate. The worker noticed a small opening near the bottom of the wall and decided that something was likely hidden inside the cavity. Once a section was carefully opened, both men were stunned by what began spilling onto the floor.

Behind the wall were thousands upon thousands of acorns, packed tightly together from the floor upward. As they removed more material, the pile grew until it covered a large portion of the carpet. Some of the acorns had become damp and moldy, creating the strange odor that had originally alerted the homeowner.

The explanation was surprisingly simple. Woodpeckers had apparently discovered openings around the exterior of the house and had been dropping acorns into the wall cavity as a food cache. Because the hollow space was hidden, the homeowner had no idea that the collection had been growing behind his walls for years.

By the time the cavity was emptied, several large bags were needed to remove everything. The exterior openings were then sealed to prevent the birds from rebuilding their enormous hidden pantry. So the mysterious smell wasn’t caused by plumbing or a dead animal—it came from a massive stash of old, deteriorating acorns hidden inside the wall.
