One of the strongest objections came from people who had personal experience with OCD. They argued that the condition can seriously interfere with everyday life and is far more complicated than simply being extremely organized or obsessed with something. The International OCD Foundation also criticized the message, explaining that casual misuse of “OCD” can contribute to misunderstanding of the disorder.

However, the reaction was far from unanimous. Other shoppers—including some who said they had OCD themselves—said they weren’t offended by the sweater and viewed it as harmless holiday humor. The disagreement quickly turned the clothing item into a wider debate about where businesses should draw the line between jokes and messages that trivialize medical or mental health conditions.

Target did respond, but contrary to the viral claim, the company did not literally tell customers to “get over it.” A spokesperson apologized for any discomfort caused by the sweater while making clear that the retailer had no plans to remove it. Target also said there had been no intention to offend customers.

The sweater therefore remained available despite the backlash, and the controversy became bigger than the item itself.
