I Noticed a Light Behind My Outlet

It started with something small enough to ignore: a faint orange glow coming from behind an electrical outlet beside the bed. Nothing was plugged into the outlet, and there was no obvious smoke or unusual noise. At first, it looked almost like a tiny indicator light hidden somewhere inside the wall.

After the glow remained visible, the homeowner became concerned and switched off the circuit at the breaker panel. An electrician was called rather than attempting to remove the outlet while it was energized. That precaution turned out to be important because the orange light wasn’t supposed to be there.

When the outlet was removed, the electrician discovered a loose electrical connection behind it. The poor connection had created resistance and enough heat to begin damaging the insulation around one of the wires. The orange glow visible through the small gap around the wall plate was coming from overheating inside the electrical box.

Fortunately, it was discovered before the surrounding material caught fire. The damaged wiring was removed, the connection and outlet were replaced, and the electrician inspected the rest of the circuit for signs of heat damage. After the repair, the mysterious glow disappeared completely.

A glowing outlet should never be considered normal unless the outlet specifically contains a built-in indicator light. Unexpected light, heat, a burning smell, discoloration, buzzing, or sparking around an outlet can indicate a dangerous electrical problem. The safest response is to stop using it, switch off the appropriate breaker if this can be done safely, and have a qualified electrician inspect it.
