Check Your Change—A Lincoln Penny Worth $336,000 Could Be Hiding in Plain Sight

Most people barely glance at the pennies they receive as change, often tossing them into a jar or leaving them in a cup holder. However, coin collectors know that an ordinary-looking Lincoln cent can sometimes be worth far more than its face value. Rare minting errors, limited production runs, and exceptional condition have turned a handful of Lincoln pennies into some of the most valuable coins ever discovered.

One of the most sought-after examples is the 1943 bronze Lincoln penny. During World War II, the U.S. Mint produced most 1943 pennies from zinc-coated steel to conserve copper for the war effort. A small number were accidentally struck using leftover bronze planchets, creating one of the rarest and most valuable error coins in American history.

Collectors also search for other valuable Lincoln cents, including the 1909-S VDB, the 1914-D, the 1922 “No D”, and the 1955 Doubled Die penny. Depending on rarity, condition, and demand, these coins can sell for thousands—or even hundreds of thousands—of dollars at major auctions. A truly exceptional specimen with verified authenticity can command astonishing prices.

If you think you’ve found a rare penny, avoid cleaning or polishing it. Cleaning can damage the coin’s surface and significantly reduce its value. Instead, compare the date, mint mark, and visible features with trusted coin references, and consider having the coin examined by a reputable coin dealer or a professional grading service for authentication.

While the odds of finding a six-figure penny are extremely small, valuable coins do occasionally turn up in old collections, inherited jars, estate sales, and even everyday pocket change. Taking a closer look at the coins you already have could uncover a fascinating piece of history—and perhaps an unexpected treasure.
