My Dad’s Wedding Took a Hilarious Turn No One Saw Coming

It was my dad’s third wedding, and the whole family was gathered in a small church decorated with flowers and candles. My stepbrother and I were part of the wedding party—he was six, I was ten—and we were both doing our best to sit still and behave. Everything was going smoothly until the preacher reached that famous line: “If anyone here objects to this union, speak now or forever hold your peace.”

Without missing a beat, my little stepbrother raised his hand. Everyone froze. My dad looked confused, the bride’s face turned pale, and you could hear people gasp in the back row. My dad cleared his throat and asked as gently as possible, “Why, buddy? Why do you object?”

And in that sweet, innocent voice only a six-year-old could pull off, he said, “Because.” That’s it—just that one word. No explanation, no reason, nothing more. The room fell silent for a few seconds… and then everyone burst into laughter. Even the preacher had to take a minute to compose himself.

The tension vanished, the ceremony continued, and to this day, that one tiny word has become a family legend. Whenever anyone brings up my dad’s weddings, we all just look at each other and say, “Because.”
