The Token That Came Back to Haunt Me

I had a huge crush on a boy back in school. We never dated, but there was always something unspoken between us. Before moving away, I left him a small token — something only the two of us understood, a secret memory sealed in that object.

Years passed, life moved on, and I eventually returned to town. One afternoon, I walked into a café and froze. Sitting at a corner table was his wife — a face I recognized instantly from photos online.

I tried to look away, but her eyes locked on mine. She stood, walked right over, and placed something on my table.

It was the token. The exact same one I had given him all those years ago.

Her gaze was sharp, almost cold, as she leaned in and whispered,
“He kept it. He told me everything.”

My heart skipped a beat. Suddenly, the past I thought was buried had resurfaced — right in front of the one person I never expected.
