A turkey hunter was making his way through thick brush down south earlier this week when he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his lower leg. Looking down, he spotted a large, nearly solid-black snake disappearing beside the rocks. Within minutes, two small puncture marks became visible, leaving him unsure whether he had just experienced a harmless defensive bite or something requiring immediate medical attention.

Instead of trying to capture the snake, he moved away and took several photographs from a safe distance. He cleaned the area, but as soreness developed around the bite, he decided not to gamble with his health. He ended the hunting trip and went directly to the nearest emergency department, bringing the photographs with him.

Doctors examined the bite and monitored him for swelling, abnormal bleeding, neurological symptoms, and other signs of envenomation. The photographs alone weren’t considered enough to identify the snake with certainty, especially because several species can appear almost completely black depending on age, location, lighting, and individual coloration.

Fortunately, after several hours of observation, he remained stable and developed no signs of serious envenomation. The wound was cleaned and treated, and he was given instructions to return immediately if swelling, worsening pain, weakness, breathing problems, vomiting, or other concerning symptoms appeared.

The experience left him with one important lesson: never try to determine the seriousness of a snakebite from a photograph or the snake’s color alone. Anyone genuinely bitten by an unidentified snake should move away from it, avoid cutting or sucking the wound or applying a tourniquet, and seek urgent professional medical help rather than waiting for symptoms to become severe.
